Developing the Interior Beauty of the Desert Rose House

Meg talking about Desert Rose House with VC and guest

Hi everyone, I’m Meg and I have been a part of the Desert Rose House for 2 years now! It’s so crazy to think that our team and our house have come so far and we are so near the end! I am the Interior Design Leader for the Desert Rose which has been a crazy adventure. I initially thought “Hey, how hard can it be, it’s nothing structural” and as an engineering student with no artistic capabilities, I started to learn just how difficult it would be. Turns out, everyone seems to have an opinion when it comes to the interior of the house and generally there is no wrong answer, which is even harder.

Our Interior Design Team’s number 1 goal is to ensure that our final product is a home, where each room tells a chapter of a whole story. In this story, the home’s residents grow old and live their lives to the full in a net zero energy home. In order to do this, the interior design team held a final workshop to involve the whole team in the decision making and ensure that the story continued between each room. We decided to work with the colour pallet of the Desert Rose Logo and it was a big job to create mood boards and bring it all together.

We were then extremely lucky to meet with Margie Rahmann from Edmiston Jones. She helped us look at the feel of the house and go through our furniture and colour choices. We were able to talk through all our designs from the very beginning and for the first time, see our big ideas from someone outside the team’s perspective. It allowed us to understand the bigger picture and instilled confidence that we actually do know what we are doing! Our team are now buckling down, ordering all the furniture and starting to look into décor for each room. We are so excited to truly showcase the beauty of the house through interior design and I can’t wait until the world gets to see what has become truly a part of who I am!
