Hi, my name is Laura and I’m part of the Communications and Operations team and I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Human Resources. I became involved through this project by being accepted as an event management intern and decided to join the team once I completed my required days.
My internship required me to complete sixteen days with the employer. I began my internship over the mid semester uni break and finished it in week six. Over the course of my sixteen days, I planned and organised a promotional event held at the university to raise awareness of the Desert Rose House and Team UOW. The event was based around a giant Jenga competition to engage students and have a bit of fun; the winner who built the highest tower won two tickets to a gig at the UniBar.
Unfortunately, the event wasn’t as successful as I had hoped due to unpredictable Australian winter weather. We had more volunteers from the project turn up and play giant Jenga than fellow students!
However, this hasn’t dampened my hopes for future events leading up to the competition and I have my sights set on getting involved with as many of these as possible. I’m looking forward to being a part of organising the sponsorship event as it will provide me with invaluable experience in a different area to what I’m used to.
I decided to join Team UOW after grasping a feel for the competition through my internship. It has opened my mind up and got me thinking about a whole world of opportunities that I never imagined. I have learned so much already and hope to be able to decipher basic engineer talk by the end of the semester.
